Agreed that anyone needs to be careful about using the term 'world-class' because it can mean an impossibly high standard in some interpretations.
Interesting you talk about tweaking an existing squad being enough, and I think that's a fair comment as long as you're willing to accept consolidation of our current position rather than progress. But with that comes the usual outside chance of disaster. I think the owners will want to change enough to guarantee survival next season, and for that I think we need improvement in all departments based on current form.
I think a problem the club has right now is that nobody is sure quite where we stand. Are we a 'better than the rest' club straddling the gap between the pack and the top 6 (which early season form might suggest). Or are we just a standard member of that mid-table pack who can still be sucked into a relegation fight if we don't start the season right? I think we're more likely the latter, but I think the club seem convinced we're better than that - I'm worried about the club getting a rude awakening next season unless it takes some bold decisions in the Summer. And whoever is the manager.

The worry in these type of statements is that is raises expectations when the term 'World Class' is included.
Most objective West Ham fans would say in recent years we've had only one truly 'World Class' player and that was Carlitos. Yet I'm guessing that Sam and to some extent Sullivan's opinion of world class is very different. Sam would say that Carroll on his day is world class.
The fact is that a chunk of our budget for next year is already allocated to the conversion of two existing loan players in Song & Jenkinson. The squad needs a few tweaks but not major overhaul especially if BFS remains in charge.

I don't think he will, but then again I didn't think he would sign on loan either, and I seem to recall half the board being convinced that Carroll wouldn't sign on loan and then perm too.

Whatever happens, to be any further up in this league we need a better midfield. Our passing is absolutely painful at times.
Since Downing has been 'tinkered' with we've lost our creative spark as well.

for me we need someone at the top end of the pitch qho can do something a bit different. last summer we were linked with valbuena and konoplyanka.............. both would be perfect. both would cost £££ but thats what we miss.
whether Sam would know how to use them is a different matter.

Maybe, but I think most would be realistic that you don't come into a club like ours and completely change the squad, evolution over revolution.

Like I say, I think he is too, but I wouldn't take what sullivan has said as proof of that as he'll have a say in who comes no matter who is in charge.

Don't disagree with that.
But what is very unlikely, is that a manager will come in and be happy with the squad. Sullivan hasn't said who the targets are, he may not even have actual targets in mind, he might just realise the same as most of us do that the squad needs improving by 5 players.
And whoever the manager is, however much he wants 100% control of the squad, I don't think that will ever happen.
